Ugg Boots. What Can Be Better?

Originally the term “Ugg Boot” has referred to a style of boot made in Australia from sheepskin.

Certainly during the First World War a version of the boot named the “Fug” (Flying Ugg) was worn by pilots. Then another version to appear on the scene during the 1930’s in Australia with worn by farmers who wanted to keep their feet warm. However, the rise in popularity seemed to happen during the 1960’s when Australian surfers would put them on after coming out of the cold Australian waters to warm up their feet.

Although there are several Australian companies which still manufacture this style of boots, unfortunately the trademark is now owned by an American Company called “Ugg Australia”. So you will find now that many boots manufactured by Australian companies which were originally known as “Ugg Boots” are now more formally known as “Australian Sheepskin Boots”.

But it does not matter whether you call them “Ugg Boots” or “Australian Sheepskin Boots” the are still both incredibly warm and soft and over the past couple of years have become a great hit with not only with celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet but also with trendsetters such as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears alike.

It is thought that the name “Ugg” originates from the shortening of the word “Ugly”. However, it is believed that “Ugg” is a generic term used by Australians for sheepskin boots. Certainly if you look in any Australian dictionary you will find the word “Ugg” or “Ug” or even “Ugh” boots. At present you will find all three of these terms have now been trademarked by Ugg Holdings Inc, part of Deckers Outdoor Corporation who are the parent company of “Ugg Australia”. So when you see the term “Ugg Boot” being used it is normally referring to an Australian made sheepskin boot or a boot that has been styled on those manufactured in Australia.

You will find the styles now available both in Ugg Boots or Sheepskin Boots is varied. They come in short and tall versions and even a mid calf length. Many women are now able to purchase their Ugg/Sheepskin boots in a variety of colours from either pink to purple or tan to brown. However, you will find that most men’s versions of these boots only come in neutral colours. You can either purchase a pair with a chunky heel and laces or just a flat heeled slip on version.

Because Ugg and sheepskin boots are considered to be a casual type of foot wear, you will find many people just wear them with a good pair of jeans. However because they are exceptionally warm they are great for cold weather (suitable for wearing during in temperatures to -30 degrees Fahrenheit). But one should always remember not to wear them during excessively wet or muddy conditions.

Although many people are often seen wearing these styles of boots with just jeans they certainly look great on a woman who wears them with just a short skirt and a pair of opaque tights (or if you want to be really daring and the weather is not too cold then go bared legged). Guys certainly prefer to wear them with jeans and a shirt to not only give them a casual look but also to make them look a little rugged. Because the sheepskin provides warmth to the feet, many people find that they do not actually need to wear socks or tights even during some of the cooler periods of the year.

Finally, you need to know how to look after these. Firstly always ensure that you wash them by hand with cold water. Never use hot water or place them in a washing machine as this will cause permanent damage to the sheepskin.

Next never ever place them close to a direct heat source when drying them. If at all possible stuff with paper towels and allow them to dry naturally. By stuffing them with paper towels you are actually helping the boot to retain its shape. If you do need to use a cleaning product on them, ensure it is one that has been recommended by the maker of your boots, unfortunately not every product available on the market for cleaning sheepskin, suede or leather is suitable to be used on these ugg boots.

Ugg Boots – Oprah’s Favourite Footwear Is Here To Stay

What do Oprah, Drew Barrymore, Keanu Reaves, Kate Hudson, Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pamela Anderson, Victoria Beckham, Cat Deeley, Minnie Driver, Danni Minogue, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, Shawn Wayans, the Spielberg family, and plenty more celebrities have in common? Aside from the obvious, they, and millions of Australians, all own a pair of the most comfortable footwear in the world – sheepskin ugg boots.

Oprah loves her ugg boots so much that she featured them on an episode of her popular show entitled Oprah’s Favourite Things 2005. Kate Hudson wore a pair of trendy ugg boots on the poster for the movie Raising Helen. Pamela Anderson is said to have started a Californian ugg boots craze when she wore her ugg boots on the set of Baywatch. The list of celebrities bitten by the ugg boot craze goes on and on.

So, of course, the question is, are ugg boots a short-lived fad that will pass like platform-heeled footwear, flared pants, big hair and other fashionable boots, or are they here to stay? The fact of the matter is that those who buy uggs to be seen as part of the latest sheepskin-inspired fashion craze will probably move on when the next footwear fashion, sheepskin or otherwise, comes along. The majority however, will likely grow so attached to their ugg boots’ perfect fit, comfortable sheepskin warmth in winter, and practical usefulness as around-the-house footwear in summer, that they will regard their ugg boots as essential to their wardrobe as their pair of trusty denims.

Like denim jeans, sheepskin ugg boots had their beginnings many years ago, long before they became fashion accessories. Originating down under in Australia, Australian surfers have worn ugg boots on cold mornings heading out to catch an early wave for as far back as any can remember. Known for generations by many names — ugg boots, ugh boots, ug boots, uggys, uggs, winter sheepskin boots, or simply as sheepskin footwear, Australians still regard the trusty ugg boot to be as much a part of Australian history and culture as Vegemite, AC/DC and a slab of beers slung over the shoulder on the way to a barbie at a mate’s house.

Now that sheepskin ugg boots are a fashion statement as much as they are winter sheepskin footwear, they’re available in many new and trendy variations. In addition to the original sheepskin leather, you can now buy ugg boots in blue, pink, beige, sand, black and chestnut, to match your personality, outfit, or fashion statement objective. Not just Aussie souvenir gifts anymore, ugg boots are personal comfort and fashion essentials.

If you follow the care instructions, your uggs could well outlast your favourite denims. The ugg boot’s soft sheepskin fleece molds to the shape of its wearer’s foot, making for a perfect fit. When you put on your own uggs, you know it’s your pair of ugg boots, because the sheepskin inside the boot shapes to fit your own foot perfectly, just the same as your denim jeans shape to your body.

Look after your sheepskin ugg boots, and they will remain your favourite item of clothing, long after winter is past, and the next big footwear fashion has arrived.

The History Of Ugg Boots

Since the middle of the twentieth century – the terms ugg boots, ugg boots and ug boots are the generic term in Oz for sheepskin boots. The name comes from ‘ugly’ boots which is thought to have been started by Australian surfers who started wearing the boots to keep their feet warm after coming out of the water in the 1960s.The popularity of sheepskin ugg boots spread from the west to the east coast of Australia and it was quickly realised that they were just as practical and comfortable to wear in ski resorts as they were on sandy beaches. The trend spread to Californian surfers in 1978 when Brian Smith a young surfer from Australia took a trip to the United States with some sheepskin boots. By the 1970s Californians were completely enamoured with the Ugg, who also appreciated the warmth that the wool lining the boots give, and they quickly became a cult fashion item in LA. It was surfers who made them the iconic boots that they are today – they had a resurgence in popularity in 2003 and have remained popular ever since.

How did they become so popular? Deckers Outdoor Corporation acquired Ugg Boots in 1995 and in 1998 made them a high-end luxury brand, through a premium distribution strategy and marketing. In 2000, Oprah Winfrey, Americas most powerful and popular presenter was sent a pair of Uggs and she loved them so much that she bought 350 pairs for her staff. She featured the Ultra Ugg Boot on her ‘Oprah’s Favourite Things’ slot, which gave the boots a massive endorsement – probably the best that Uggs could have gotten. She did the same thing again in 2003 and 2005 with the Classic Boots and the Uptown Boots, and they both immediately became a ‘must have’ item for Americans.

Uggs became a the ‘Brand of the year’ in 2003 by Footwear News and from then on the sheepskin boots were to be found on the runways in Paris, New York and Milan. High fashion and ultra comfort all rolled into one! Today, all over the world, everyone from your next door neighbour to celebrities wear Uggs, with everything from trousers to shorts and skirts!

There are many different manufacturers of Ugg boots – along with Decker’s “Original UGG Australia” boots, there are a wide variety of other sheepskin boots available for sale, for example Celtic Sheepskin (who manufacture their boots in the UK), Love from Australia and Koolaburra.

The Ugg Knightsbridge Provides Comfort and Style

UGG Knightsbridge – A Fashion-Forward Boot

The UGG Knightsbridge boot is one of UGG’s tall boots. The wide toe box and boxy heel is right in line with this year’s casual styles. The multi-color side zipper makes them easy to step into, adds a fashion accent to the boot, and the selection of colors includes some of UGG’s most popular – black, espresso, chestnut and tan. The UGG Knightsbridge has a slimmer leg than the UGG classic, and this makes the UGG Knightsbridge a great choice for wear with skirts, sundresses and other leg showoffs.

UGG may be one of the most in vogue styles of boot ever. However, there is more to UGG Knightsbridge than style and great looks. The level of comfort provided by UGG Knightsbridge is unparalleled but other stylish boots. This combination of style and comfort is why the UGG Knightsbridge has become so popular.

UGG Comfort

Originally designed to be worn in the outback, UGG boots have taken the world by storm. There are stories which explain that UGG boots were originally created to be worn by surfers on Australia’s beaches to keep their feet warm when they came out of the water. Take one look at UGG boots and you can see why. There is no doubt about the comfort factor when it comes to UGG boots.

UGG footwear is made with genuine sheep skin, one of the most naturally comfortable materials in the world. Australian sheepskin is so comfortable that it is widely marketed as the most natural and comfortable sleep surface for newborn babies. If sheepskin can keep a newborn baby comfortable, just imagine how good it feels on your feet. UGG shoes are made from the finest quality sheepskin, both inside and out, and are meant to fit your feet like a glove fits your hand. The UGG Knightsbridge boot is no different, made with an EVA outsole for cushion and lightweight comfort.

Unlike most other shoes, UGG footwear is designed to be worn on bare feet. Sheepskin has a natural wicking action that pulls moisture away from your feet and allows air to circulate freely around them. That means that your feet are insulated – warm in winter, cool and dry in summer. When you wear UGG footwear, your feet feel clean and fresh all day long.

The insoles of UGG footwear are shaped to fit your feet. In fact these insoles are malleable enough to form around the exact shape of your foot. UGG boots are lined with shearling – the softest, springy wool. According to wearers, walking in UGG boots is like walking on pillows. The lightweight soles make it easier to walk as well. Especially if you are on your feet a lot, clunky, heavy boots can tire your legs out. With UGG boots, this is never an issue. That is one reason why they are a popular choice with actresses for wear on the set between takes.

UGG footwear is also a great value. At around $200 a pair retail, they are certainly not bargain basement prices, but the price is more than reasonable for such quality made footwear. Each Knightsbridge boot is reinforced with double-stitched seams for long wear. The soles are also durable, made of high quality materials and molded to provide excellent traction on all types of terrain. If you care for your UGG boots properly, they can last for years.

Caring for Your UGG Boots

UGG boots are not too difficult to keep in good-as-new condition. First, remember that UGGs are not meant to be worn in wet weather. If they do get soaked or dirty, sponge them off with cold water on a soft cloth, then stuff them with a soft cloth, towel or crumpled newspaper and allow them to dry away from direct heat. Do not machine wash or machine dry, and use a protective coat made especially for suede products to protect them from the weather and spotting.

Ugg Boots – More Than Just a Name

Origin

From farmers, to aviator pilots, to surfers and the most fashion conscious of international celebrities, ugg boots have a distinct and colourful history that has seen them become a ‘household essential’ in all parts of the world.

This handcrafted sheepskin boot is predominantly known worldwide as an ‘ugg boot’, however since its inception in Australia over 200 years ago, it has also been referred to as an ‘ug, ugh and fug’ boot. All of these names are merely a generic term for Australian-made sheepskin boots, rather than a brand name. The word ugg actually means ugly in the Australian dictionary, although most people would claim they are more of an item of beauty.

The woollen inner lining of an ugg boot naturally warms the feet and allows circulation to keep away moisture, which also helps resist unwanted odours. The boots are designed to be worn without socks and effectively insulate the feet in cold weather and cool them during warmer conditions.

Whilst the reasoning behind their name has remained much of a mystery, their uses and benefits have proved invaluable and inspirational for a variety of people over the years.

Initial discovery of Ugg boots

During the 19th century, sheep farming became a major industry in Australia. Farmers and ranchers utilised every part of the sheep, making bulky, well-lined ugg boots to keep their feet warm and dry, as well as clothing and various other household items.

Farmers across Australia steadily grew accustomed to wearing ugg boots on a daily basis, however it wasn’t until World War I and II that the true value of natural fibre ugg boots was properly put to test. Aviator pilots used ‘fug’ boots (flying ugs) to keep their feet loose, comfortable and at a constant warm temperature in non-pressurized planes at high altitudes.

During the 1960’s ugg boots really unleashed their fashionable influence on society and much of this was attributed to a growing worldwide surfing phenomenon. Australian surfers decided it was extremely cosy and warm to jump out of the surf and into a pair of sheepskin boots.

The popularity of ugg boots rapidly spread throughout Australia. During the winter months, surfers replaced their boards with skis and poles and started wearing their ugg boots in ski resorts on Australia’s Snowy Mountains. At the time, ugg boots were also a hit with competitive swimmers.

Home of the world’s finest wool

Geelong-based company Jacksons Tannery, a hide trading and tanning specialist, were approached by surfers from along the Victorian Coast in the 1970’s, who wanted to use their sheepskin to make their own warm, post surfing ugg boots.

At the time, the Geelong area was regarded as the home to the world’s finest wool. It is also the home of EMU Australia, one of the longest standing Australian ugg boot manufacturers. The surfer’s original design was very basic – essentially two pieces of sheepskin in the shape of a boot, joined together down the centre-front and back with a soft sole attached to the bottom. There were no hard soles back then – they were practically a glorified sock!

Jacksons Tannery quickly recognised the need to improve the quality and performance of the surfer’s basic sheepskin design, so they began subcontracting their sheepskin to shoe makers.

Ugg boots – Trademark controversy

In 1971, Australian Shane Stedman recognised the potential in sheepskin boots and registered ‘ugh boot’ with the Australian Trade Mark Registry. It lapsed and decades later it ended up in the hands of US company Deckers Outdoor Corporation, along with the other various spellings.

Deckers eventually tried to restrict all Australian sheepskin boot companies from using the use of the terms Ugh, Ug and Ugg based on the grounds of litigation and trademark ownership, but restrictions on the use of these terms were removed from the Australian Trade Mark register in 2006, allowing all sellers to use the terms.

Ugg boots go global

In 1978, Australian surfer Brian Smith took a dozen pairs of ugg boots to the US. Several Californian surfers took to their benefits and almost immediately Smith was importing more pairs from Australia. The following year Smith formed a partnership with Jacksons to supply boots to the US under the registered ‘UGG’ brand. In 1993 UGG Australia was sold to Deckers.

EMU launched

EMU Australia was launched in 1994 by employees from Jacksons and due to the huge demand for ugg boots in the US, they quickly appointed a distributor in Boulder, Colorado.

Suddenly, EMU’s mission to become the world’s best sheepskin footwear company was fast becoming reality. With over 40 distributors and 10,000 retailers, EMU is now the leading footwear brand in Australia and the fastest growing sheepskin footwear brand in the world.

Whilst stilettos, platforms and wedges are must-haves to pump up that strut in our modern society, ugg boots have been making their way off the shelves for decades, not for their ‘chic visage’ but for their ultimate features – comfort and warmth. Just as they have done for over 200 years.

With new styles available all year round, come and see the Natureshop for current and upto date styles of various ugg boots for men and women.

But Ugg boots now come in a variety of styles, sizes and colors and can generally be incorporated in any kind of apparel you on wearing.
